Winter Olympics 2026: MILAN Metropolitan City of Milan hosted the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics on Friday night. Athletes from across the globe marched proudly during the Parade of Nations as the Games officially began.

The size of Olympic teams varied widely. Some nations arrived with just one competitor while others brought large contingents. The biggest squad at the Winter Games belongs to the United States.

Team USA announced its largest winter Olympic team in history shortly before the event with a total of 232 athletes. The lineup features 98 returning Olympians. Among them are seven athletes competing in their fourth Games ten athletes appearing for the third time and 22 athletes taking part for the second time.

Canada follows with 207 athletes. Host nation Italy and Japan are tied with 196 competitors each. Germany has sent 184 athletes while Switzerland is close behind with 175.

At the other end of the scale several countries are represented by only one athlete at the 2026 Winter Olympics. These include Benin, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Eritrea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Malaysia, Malta, Monaco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Puerto Rico, San Marino, Singapore, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Team USA explained that Olympic athletes are chosen by National Governing Bodies. These organisations oversee training competition and athlete development for each sport. Selection is based on pre decided performance standards.

After the initial selection the names are reviewed by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee to ensure all eligibility rules and procedures are met. In most winter sports world circuit rankings play a key role in identifying top performers. Athletes must therefore stay focused on their regular season results alongside Olympic ambitions.

Those who narrowly miss selection are often listed as alternates. They may step in if a selected athlete is injured or becomes ineligible.

Team USA described the Winter Olympics as the highest stage of the sport where fans can experience the thrill of competition from the halfpipe to the ice rink and from mountain slopes to packed arenas.
