Border 2: Bollywood has been enjoying an exceptional run at the box office in recent months. After delivering the biggest blockbuster of 2025 in the form of Dhurandhar which amassed more than 1300 crore gross worldwide the new year has also begun on a strong note. The latest release Border 2 opened to a phenomenal response on Friday and set the tone for a robust weekend.

Boosted by the excitement surrounding the sequel and the massive success of Sunny Deols previous hit Gaddar 2 the war drama registered a record breaking start with collections close to 30 crore net on the very first day. This is an even stronger opening than Dhurandhar which had started with around 28.6 crore on its release day in early December.

The Friday holiday in several northern states further aided Border 2 as theatres witnessed impressive footfalls through the day. This happened despite the film not securing unanimous reviews or strong word of mouth due to reported narrative issues and technical shortcomings. While the film fell well short of the historic opening day numbers of Gaddar 2 trade analysts still describe the start as sensational for a sequel.

Before its release Border 2 had already sold more than four lakh tickets and secured encouraging user ratings on online ticketing platforms indicating that a strong weekend run is likely. The theatrical trailer helped build notable hype and there was no significant competition in cinemas apart from the continuing run of Dhurandhar which also supported its performance.

The response from audiences and critics in Hindi speaking markets has been largely positive and encouraging. However reactions from southern markets have been mixed with criticism aimed at the visual effects and the limited emotional intensity in the narrative.

Even so if Border 2 connects well with Hindi audiences in the coming days it has every chance of sustaining its box office momentum and invoking a wave of nostalgia thanks to the impact of the original film released in the nineties.

The film is directed by Anurag Singh. Sunny Deol reprises his lead role and is joined by Varun Dhawan Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty as fellow leads. The cast also includes Mona Singh Sonam Bajwa Anya Singh and Medha Rana in important roles.
